On Friday, October 24 the Foreign Minister of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD), together with the Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, Bert Koenders, signed a treaty addressing the border in the Ems estuary area. The exact boundary line between the two countries has been unclear since the 15th century.
A new version of the Ems-Dollard Treaty, signed in 1960 “in the spirit of good neighborliness”, had become necessary as the construction of Riffgat brought up jurisdictional issues regarding the permit legislation.
The treaty will place the Riffgat Wind Farm – a joint project between ENOVA and EWE AG – on a “secure base according to international law,” according to the Foreign Office. Thus there is now legal security for both operators and investors.
